Migrating to PrestaShop 9 is more than an update: version 9 is built on a modernised stack (Symfony 6.4, recent PHP), so modules and themes made for older versions must be checked and often adapted.

Why migrate now

Security (1.6 and 1.7 no longer receive fixes), performance and compatibility with new modules and payment methods.

The steps

  1. Audit: modules actually used, theme, code overrides, integrations, traffic-generating URLs
  2. Upgrade or fresh install: from a recent 8.x an upgrade is often possible; from 1.6/1.7, install a clean 9 and migrate data
  3. Modules and theme: compatible versions, replacements, rewrites — or a redesign, see e-commerce redesign method
  4. Data: products, variants, customers, orders — all checked
  5. SEO: keep URLs or 301 each product and category
  6. Testing and switch-over on a copy, at a quiet time, with a rollback plan
A good PrestaShop migration goes unnoticed by customers — except for a faster store.

PrestaShop migration: FAQ
